In case you missed it and wanted to know more, or if you enjoy hearing about a peculiar experience, here is an update on our cooperative event with Cinema out of the Box! a few weeks ago: COofB! volunteers arrived in their Milk Plus Box Bike toting all their gear. They then set everything up, right in La Cave! We watched the film on our one bare wall. The projector and sound system were all powered by a battery which, in turn, was powered by participants in the event on a bike attached to a rig which powers the battery. The film was "La Haine"(1995) directed by Mathieu Kassovitz, a film depicting "...19 consecutive hours in the lives of three friends in their early twenties from immigrant families living in an impoverished multi-ethnic French housing project (a ZUP – zone d'urbanisation prioritaire) in the suburbs of Paris, in the aftermath of a riot..." Following which we had a facilitated discussion where we discussed the film and both Cinema out of the Box! and La Cave Bike Collective as sustainability projects!
Thank you to everyone who made this event possible and remember to keep an eye out for more coming from both La Cave and COofB!

If you're wondering what to do this weekend, La Cave has you covered. Working in collaboration with other projects in McGill University's sustainability campaign, we are proud to present a special film screening to be held in La Cave's space this weekend! This Sunday La Cave and Cinema out of the Box!, a sustainability project which works through the Moving Image Research Laboratory, will be presenting an as-of-yet unannounced film from their collection using a projector-generator set powered by bicycles! Cinema out of the Box! has the mission of creating mobile tools to bring cinematic experiences to everyone in new and unexpected ways, all the while preserving the "experience" that can be lost through mobile devices and a world increasingly on the move. By creating ecological and practical methods of bringing films into almost any environment, they provide ways of enjoying a time-honored medium, cinema, in almost any situation. The union of bicycles, a supreme tool in the urban landscape, and cinema has us all a tizzy! So we invite you to learn more about these projects and to enjoy some time steeped in this facet of the particular culture of Montreal life! Film starts at 7:30PM (19h30) this Sunday June 8th Doors open at 7:00 PM *In order to help us manage space, please RSVP below in the provided form* Hello all! Welcome back (soon, at least)! Our hiatus is nearly over and the doors of La Cave will re-open as soon as next week! We are currently planning to hold extra hours on the date of June 4th from 12:00 to 4PM as well as on the following weekend, the 7th and 8th, wherein we will continue our regular weekend hours. We are also looking for volunteers for both our Saturday and Sunday (Women, Trans*, and Queer) hours, so be sure to check our volunteer page here to learn more about volunteering with us and how to do so. Finally, watch out for events from La Cave in the near future! We're currently looking at some "bike-powered" film screenings for the month of June, so keep your eyes peeled for further information on that!
We can't wait to see everyone in the space! Ride-along, May days! Though La Cave may be closed, and thereby limit the availability of tools and materials for your bike maintenance, have no fear! We put together a list of inexpensive solutions for basic bike problems that may have hampered your sunny day rides and halogen-lit night cruising. 1. Bike pumps (Float like a butterfly, roll like a...wheel) La Cave , unfortunately, cannot provide any bike pumps without opening our doors or having volunteers on call to help provide access to them. However, there are a slew of options that are available to you to remedy your problem, here are two of them: Gas Station Air-Pumps The easiest and most efficient way to keep your wheels on the clouds is to stop by a gas station and ask to use their pump. They usually allow it and it's fast! Mini Hand-pumps Another good idea is to invest in an inexpensive hand-pump you can carry with you wherever you go, very convenient for road-side emergencies! 2. Monthly/Weekly/ Daily Maintenance
In case you need to have access to lubricants, bike tubes, patches, or anything else for you bike's health (and yours, of course) you can visit any of the may bike collectives across Montreal! Here is a great registry of bike collectives like La Cave (meaning inexpensive and super fun to visit!) presented by Right To Move. OR, you can always search for a professional bike store to stock up or get repairs done. Though this is a more expensive option, they are always outfitted and may have more regular hours than a bike collective. 3. And, hey, call me? La Cave is also easy to contact. Though we may be formally closed for a period of time, volunteers are a phone-call away and we can organize access to La Cave depending on our availability. See our contact page for more details on getting in touch! Due to a lack of volunteers and our dependency on a student base, La Cave's regular hours will be closed for the month of May.
We will re-open on Sunday, June 1st, from 12:00 to 4:00 PM In the mean-time, if you need access La Cave at any time, email "[email protected]" and we will get back to you as soon as we can! Hello all!
La Cave is going to put through another order in coming weeks and we are taking special requests! Our supplier is "Babac Cycle" in Montreal and we will be conducting this order the week of April 24th. Let us know about any special requests, items or tools you want to see in La Cave, or any particular gear you wished you could get your hands on and we'll see what we can do! TO ORDER: 1. Take a look at Babac's online catalog or come in to La Cave to look through our paper catalog. 2. Comment on this post with your request and we'll add it to our list. We'll be accepting orders until April 24th 3. For special requests, shoot us a message through the "Contact" page so we can work out the details of your request! Get ready for summer bike rides with the right tools and materials! Order today! La Cave's preliminary responsibility is to provide bike services to the "far-far-away" students in this soulful rez outside of the McGill bubble. Unfortunately, like so many jewels in Solin, you have to dig deep to find the shining rewards of a dedicated apartment/rez lifestyle.
Towards the end of developing more Solin residence awareness, we've drawn up brochure (on which this website is modeled!) that will be included in Solin move-in dossiers at the beginning of the 2014 Fall term. Hopefully it will inform students from the beginning about the incredible potential for Montreal immersion through an extremely local, below-their-feet opportunity! |
